31/5/2020 0 Comments May 2020 Movie/TV Round-UpEverything I watched this past month including On My Block, After and more! on my block (season 1 & 2)Four soon-to-be high schoolers are best friends in a rough neighbourhood. The show follows Monse, Cesar, Jamal and Ruby as they navigate high school and friendships as Black and Hispanic youth. This show is such a refreshing take on teen drama! I had never watched a teen show that tackled issues like gang affiliation before. It was also very cool to see Black and Hispanic characters at the forefront of a coming-of-age show. I thoroughly enjoyed the first season and couldn't wait to see what would happen next. The second season was a bit underwhelming for me and I was not as hooked. The story lines were slow and unexciting. Sierra Capri (Monse) has notably bad acting in the second season and each scene feels like she just memorised the script, which became incredibly distracting to me. gentlemen prefer blondes (1953)Two showgirls, Lorelei and Dorothy, go to Paris. Lorelei's wealthy, naive fiancé - Gus Esmond - is meant to go with her but his father becomes suspicious of Lorelei's motives and sends a private detective to spy on her antics on the Paris trip. I was taken by the elaborate musical numbers and the beautiful fashion in this film. I found the narrative to be quite interesting as Lorelei (Marilyn Monroe) is portrayed as this senseless gold-digger, however, she has a point. Men in the film want to adorn her with money and gifts, but when she openly admits to enjoying it, it is seen as something unfavourable. A notion that is definitely prevalent in current society. skins (season 1)The first two seasons of Skins follows eight teenagers from Bristol, England, as they deal with love and life during their formative years. This is definitely one of my favourite coming-of-age dramas of all time. I've never seen such a raw, exciting, funny portrayal of adolescence. The show is plain in approach; no fancy colour grading, camera angles, costumes or make-up. It's like watching real teens experience life in a more action-packed and dramatised way. Each episode explores a particular character, something you may be familiar with if you've watched Euphoria, so you get to know each character in an intimate way. The show was also way ahead of its time and tackled gay relationships, substance abuse, and mental illness. after (2019)Tessa is fresh out of high school and ready to begin her college journey. She befriends her roommate who soon introduces Tessa to her friend group, including a mysterious boy named Hardin. At first, Tessa and Hardin couldn't seem more different however they discover that they have more in common than they thought. Although it didn't receive great reviews, I enjoyed it. It's not a ground-breaking young adult romance but it's not bad either. There were some beautiful shots that encapsulated the romance of love and lust. Directed by Jenny Gage, the imagery seemed true to a female perception and not a male gaze. mad men (season 7)The seventh season of Mad Men marks the end of an era for all the characters and the start of new beginnings. The final season of Mad Men is split in two. The first half of the season was exciting and left me wanting to know what would happen next. However, there is less momentum in the second half as characters ruminate about what they want out of their careers and lives. The finale was satisfying. You get to see where all the characters are up until that point and get to imagine what the future will hold for them going forward. It's neither an end nor beginning. Overall, a great show that has complex characters, amazing attention to detail and shows very little that says so much. dead to me (season 1 & 2)Jen and Judy meet in a support group where they soon bond over shared feelings of tragic loss. As they grow closer as friends, secrets and lies come out. A really entertaining tragicomedy that keeps you on your toes. The roles are so well acted by both Christina Applegate (Jen) and Linda Cardellini (Judy). The show takes you through the motions with the characters but there is always something funny to come out of the drama. Written by: Vidal Thaver
