31/1/2019 0 Comments January 2019 Movie/TV Round-UpMy review of movies and TV shows I've watched this past month including Beautiful Boy, You and more! Beautiful boy (2018)Nic Sheff is a teenager with a seemingly bright life ahead of him. Excelling at water polo, being the editor of the school newspaper and getting acce-pted into all the colleges he applied to, but, his life is turned upside down by his addiction to drugs, mainly crystal meth. What I really loved about this movie was the rollercoaster it takes the audience on with regards to dealing with an addict. Drug addiction is something that is so glamourised and it's tragic to see so many bright, young people being plagued with the dangerous affects of substance abuse. Chalamet delivered such a great performance in this role. You - Season 1Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) is an independent bookstore manager who becomes obsessed with one of the store's customers, aspiring writer Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail). Joe uses Beck's social media and physical stalking to get close to her 'romantically'. I love psychological thrillers and this series presented an intriguing storyline. It's so crazy how technology can actually let strangers into your personal life to such a scary extent. I felt that some parts of the series were very unrealistic, which usually wouldn't be an issue, but the setting of most of the series is very realistic, especially with social media being so integral. The office (US) - Season 1, 2 & 3Adapted from the UK original version of the show, also called The Office, season one introduces the main characters: Pam, Dwight, Michael, Jim and Ryan. Michael Scott (Steve Carell) is the manager of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company and the series takes on a mockumentary style. Although I've seen a few episodes of the series throughout the years, this was the first time I sat down and actually watched the episodes in sequence. The writing is so hilarious in a cringe-worthy way and I really want to watch the original version after I'm done with the US version. After finishing Friends, I've developed a love to binge comedic series. sex and the city - season 1Taking it back to 1998, this month I was formally introduced to Carrie Bradshaw and her three gal-pals - Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda. My mom was a big fan of the series when I was growing up, but I was always too young to watch it with her so here I am, binging at 19 over twenty years after it first hit screens. The series follows Carrie, a sex columnist in New York City, and her three friends as they embark on all types of escapades (especially sexual ones). I felt the first few episodes were purely introductory and weren't that exciting, but as the season progressed, it got funnier and the show lets you into the girls' close-knit circle more. crazy rich asians (2018)Rachel Chu and Nick Young are a couple happily in love. Nick invites Rachel to join him at his best friend's wedding in Singapore. Rachel is surprised to learn that his family is extremely wealthy, whereas she is the daughter of a single, immigrant, working-class mom. Nick's family does not approve of his relationship with Rachel and his mom goes to lengths to prove it. A massive thumbs up for all the representation! I'm most proud of the fact that most of the actors did not have to change their accents to 'sound Asian'. I know I am quite late in watching this, but it was a wonderful film. It didn't have an amazing plot, but it was true to Asian culture and traditions which I loved. It brought Eastern values and issues to the Western world which I hope to see more of in future.
