Last month, I attended Cape Town Squad's Animation Movie Night in collaboration with The Animation School and Supp Film. The event took place at The Grand Daddy Boutique Hotel where graduate films from The Animation School were screened! Cape Town Squad Movie Nights is a recurring event hosted by independent production company, Cape Town Squad. The company aims to create opportunities for independent filmmakers to tell their unique stories from around the world! Cape Town Squad was founded by Jacques Adriaanse and Natasha Mayet, striving to foster collaboration among filmmakers. Each Movie Night screens a different set of films with a new theme. The latest theme was 'Animation Movie Night' that featured ten animation short films, followed by a Q&A with some of the filmmakers. The featured films were:
My favourite shorts of the night were Hadidance and Sockworld. They both took relatable topics - the annoying calls of a Hadeda and the frustration of losing one sock out of a pair - and turned them into unique stories with a fun twist. Both films provided an entertaining, uplifting approach to scenarios that people usually roll their eyes at. Another great element of these films was their worldbuilding. Both shorts transported you to new worlds that were well thought out and captivating. The filmmakers from Hadidance, Ember and Mite-y Beard answered some questions during the Q&A session. Some great takeaways from the session were: "Is there a place in animation for someone who works with more mathematical or logical processes?" "Yes, there certainly is. We use a tool called Houdini and Houdini is very much a VFX, lighting and mathematically-based programme. This comes into the cool thing about animation, it marries the art and tech world so you do sometimes need to be into the mathematical side of things and understanding these algorithms." "I'm a screenwriter and I have a story that I've always dreamed of making into an animation but I don't know where to start." "There's a lot of writing story labs and a lot of studios look for stories. I worked at Triggerfish and they have writer's labs. They bring in a bunch of people who have stories and they help you work through [the stories], so there are people looking for stories."
