‘So love me in the dark
And it won't tear us apart.’
You may recognise these lyrics as part of the catchy chorus of Love in the Dark by Kaien Cruz and Sketchy Bongo. The song's rhythmic beats get your hips moving and the music video is so aesthetically pleasing. But what really makes the song a hit is the talented vocals of Kaien.
Born and bred in Pietermaritzburg, Kaien Cruz played a lot of sports growing up - mainly soccer and hockey. She decided that she wanted to sing professionally at age seventeen. I was lucky enough to ask her a few questions about her booming singing career and background.
V: What music did you grow up listening to and who are your musical inspirations?
K: Having an older sister, I just listened to whatever she listened to which was a lot of Christina Aguilera and JoJo. My musical inspirations are Tori Kelly and Drake.
V: Do you have any pre-show rituals?
K: Before a show I usually just get hyped and amp myself up by jumping around and shaking off any nerves.
V: Who are the biggest supporters of your career?
K: My family are definitely my biggest supporters.
V: What message do you want to portray in your music?
K: To always be yourself and never be afraid of what people might think! Just be who you are and love yourself.
V: What inspires you the most?
K: Life can be so crazy sometimes and with my songwriting I definitely draw inspiration from life and love.
V: Where do you see yourself in five years?
K: I see myself doing what I'm doing now just on a bigger and better scale.
V: Is your family musically inclined?
K: My dad has a bit of a musical background [so] I definitely got my musical talent from his side of the family.
V: How did you react when you found out you were going to be part of the opening act for Justin Bieber?
K: At first it didn't seem real but when I actually got to the stadium for the first Joburg show I realized how insane it was! Especially because the last time I had been at that stadium I was in the crowd watching One Direction live with friends and now I was going to be on stage performing. It was such an amazing experience.
When Kaien Cruz isn't singing on stage, she's honing her creativity through drawing, writing and playing the guitar. She is a true, local, musical talent and I can't wait to see her career flourish.
